Another favorite road movie of mine which also stars Burt Reynolds is, "The Cannonball Run". Yeah, "Cannonball Run" was a fun movie, I read that Burt Reynolds hated it, but did it as a favor to director Hal Needham, it sure doesn't show when you watch it, I think Burt was ready to move on to more action films like "Sharky's Machine", Hollywood wanted him to do Eastwood's "Every which way but loose" but Clint liked it so much that Burt told him he should do it.

This is why remakes fail.... Walking Tall (1973) vs (2004).. The original film depicted the life of Tennessee Sherriff Buford Pusser who sought to clean up corruption in his town...the villians are downright nasty, nothing is held back here, the death of his wife is brutal & very disturbing to watch...the ending is sad but satisfying....wheras the 2004 version with the Rock is watered down...it is like they purposely went out of their way not to make you uncomfortable which is why the remake fails....The Rock (Dewayne Johnson) does his best with it but even he couldn't save it. "I spit on your Grave (1978) vs (2010)... It was 1990 when I first saw the 78 film, I will admit it bothered me, the rape scenes disturbed me big time, it would be another 15 years before I would watch it again in 2005, this time on DVD, it disturbed me then too, but since that time I have come to appreciate the fact that it shows how ugly a rape can be, & although it is uncomfortable to watch, the aftermath is where its power is, we see Camille Keaton's Jennifer Hills recovering from the trauma, there is no music, Camille really convinces the viewer she was raped with her facial expressions & sadness & when she decides to get revenge on her attackers we are all behind her 100%........this is where the remake with Sarah Butler fails.....when Camille's Jennifer meets her rapist in the beginning they don't seem threatning at all, whereas Butler's rapists give you a bad feeling from the start, bad move on the remake, Butler's rape scenes although disturbing, is watered down, Camille's scenes are far more uglier in their depiction, again the director in the remake played it safe, the aftermath of Butler's rape has no I repeat no recovery scenes, she is gone for about 15 minutes in the film then re-emerges as a psycho-like demon posessed woman, there is no silent trauma as with Keaton, no expressions of sadness & "what do I do now" moments...simply put Butler's Jennifer I had a hard time getting behind......she just wasn't as convincing....to make matters worse the remake goes for the "Saw" ripoff with over the top kills that was more or less a cheap cash-in.....the 78 film had raw emotion, the 2010 remake has no emotion at all which why this remake fails to deliver on the original.....Jodie Foster's 1988 film "The Accused" is just as powerful as she too is gang raped in a bar & we see the trauma of the aftermath & her quest for judicial justice, like Camille we are behind Foster 100% because we have watched her deal with the trauma of it all.....both "ISOYG" & "The Accused" deal with the uncomfortable subject of rape & its effects on the victims. The Amityville Horror (1979) vs (2005).... Having read the book the 1979 film with James Brolin & Margot Kidder is a faithful adaption of the book, some things are left out because there is only so much that you can do in a 2 hour movie, but all the scary elements are in the film as they are the book, the only liberty taken is the priest doesn't lose his sight in the book, but other than that a faithful adaption.....the 2005 remake is again like other dumb remakes a cheap cash-in.....it is nothing like the book, it doesn't even come close, it is scary?..yes...but a cheap cash in nontheless....there are so many things wrong with this one...again they went for the shock factor & no substance which is why the remake fails like every other remake. Poltergeist (1982) vs (2015)..... The original 1982 film is a classic film with a nice family in the suburbs, most likely the valley of L.A. that deal with unseen forces terrorizing their home & is a real suspense thriller......as for the remake....I got maybe 15 to 20 minutes into it & saw no point in continuing......in one word BORING!! V The Original Miniseries/Final Battle (1983/1984) vs (2010)..... The 1980's T.V. films saw some interesting characters coming together to fight off fascists aliens disguised as humans who want to take over the world, every character gets explored & there many cool action set pieces as well as good drama & yes practical effects.....the 2010 remake is overblown with CGI whereas in the original you believed they were on a mothership, with the remake the mothership looks like a computer simulated whatever.....the characters are bland & devoid of any personality......again why bother.....again handed to idiots who have no business making films! Vacation (1983) vs (2015)..... The first film is the classic cross country road trip with the all american family lead by Chevy Chase & everything that can go wrong on this trip does not to mention being tempted by a hot Christie Brinkley in a ferrari.....all around a fun movie.......the 2015 film is more of a sequel but goes for being a direct rip-off as the son Rusty is trying to take his own family on the same kind of trip.....so many things wrong here....for starters they couldn't get Anthony Michael Hall???....secondly he too is tempted by a hot chick who gets killed in a head on collision with a 18 wheeler truck, the scene is meant to be funny, but isn't, add to the fact that there is all this gross out humor....uuggghhh.....I won't even get started on the sewer lake scene....the only reason to watch this one is for Christina Applegate.....who looks bored, you will be bored too....again did the filmakers not see the original film??......nowhere near as funny as Chevy Chase's film.....more like an insult.....again made by idiots. Child's Play (1988) vs (2018).... The first film is a fun ride with some good suspense moments......the remake....does anyone remember the remake???....yeah, me neither.....it came & went didn't it.

Why the "Passion of the Christ" is the best depiction of Jesus' final hours....
When released in 2004, this was a surprise hit & director Mel Gibson based it on scripture & self financed it himself & pretty much laughed all the way to the bank....there have been countless films & miniseries depicting the life of Jesus but most were watered down in their depiction of Jesus' final hours, Gibson's film shows how ugly a crucifixion is & was, it was brutal & very few even made it to the cross back then, is it hard to watch, yes, but the sacrifice Jesus made for the love of mankind is powerful, this film likely inpired HBO to do the miniseries "Rome" which shows us the Roman Empire at the height of its rule, set 40 years before the birth of Christ, the Romans were brutal & this miniseries shows Roman brutality in all its ugliness, "Starz miniseries "Spartucus" does the same thing.....simply put there is no politically correct BS in "Rome" or "Spartucus"....it is in your face brutality of the Roman Empire & why the Roman Empire is still regarded as a powerful time in history, the Coliseum arena fights were brutal & luckily we are not as barbaric as people were then, one thing you realize when watching these miniseries is this..you are glad you were not living then!....you were either a slave or a Roman elite, there was no in between, I personally am not a fan of bloody violence, but when put in a historical context I can accept it, the problem with Hollywood today is they don't want to make people uncomfortable which is understandable but how are we to better ourselves if we don't know history, somtimes we need to be made to feel uncomfortable in films or mini-series so we can reflect on where we are today as a society & are we better for it.

This is why remakes fail.... I haven't seen most of those remakes. Mostly because I just knew that they were going to be bad. One that I did watch that you haven't mentioned was the 2014 "RoboCop" remake. I bought it on DVD since it was on sale for $10 and I am a big RoboCop fan so I thought I'd take a chance on it, and while it wasn't a bad movie, it just didn't have the same impact that the original film does. I have only watched it once since I purchased it. I should get it out and give it another viewing and see if I like it any better after all of these years later.

I haven't seen the "RoboCop" remake so I can't comment on it which is why I left it out, also I have not seen the "Death Wish" remake either.....not sure if Bruce Willis is as effective as Charles Brosnson was, the 1974 original "Death Wish" came on the heels of "Dirty Harry" & told the story of how ineffective police are in dealing with crime....a very effective vigilante film with Bronson as the every man who takes revenge after his wife is killed & his daughter is raped.......the remake with Bruce Willis judging from the trailer appears to want to make a political statement, because I have not seen the remake & can't comment on it...not yet anyway..

The Best ever cop show on television....NYPD Blue.. .. ....with all this negative press about the police I have to wonder if this show would air as long as it did....this was a gritty police drama & tackled many issues with the NY police department, even race issues were tackled but no one had a meltdown, case is point....the captain was black & is pulled over by a racist cop who is unaware that he is his captain....so what does the captain do....pairs him up with a black cop to help him realize that being racist is wrong.....that is how you change one's attitude toward racism, not with violence......this was the best ever police drama & my personal favorite......this is a police drama done right.

Today I pay tribute to my precious Star who's birthday would have been today, when I met her it was on a forum like this back in 2016, she was in CA & me in TN, I didn't expect it to go anywhere, but it did & before I knew it we were on the phone everyday & after a year in 2017 we finally met & spent a week together, it would be our first & last week together before she would pass away from complications on conjestive heart failure that is sort of like cancer, it hits you at random & is more or less a death sentence, it got me thinking about those films where love can happen unexpectedly, you know those films where two people seem unlikely to get together but do after being thrown into unforseen circumstances, these are the kinds of romance films I like to watch because they remind us that that special person is out there somtimes when we are not looking......the one film that comes to mind is the 1985 film "The Sure Thing" ..directed by Rob Reiner where John Cusack is into Daphne Zuniga but she is too uptight & not into him, they find themselves on this cross country road trip together unexpectedly & you can guess what happens later, it is definately one of my favorites & has likely happened to people, another one also directed by Rob Reiner is 1989's "When Harry Met Sally" which was a popular film where Billy Crystal is into Meg Ryan but she not into him, years pass & after a series of bad relationships for both they form a friendship to get past their bad relationships & discover that special person is their new best friend, this was the film that asked the question, can men & women be friends?, this is one I can watch again & again, not because of the romance factor but because Billy Crystal is just downright funny & Meg Ryan looked her best here....... The one film that does hit close to home for me & is one that I can truly identify with is 2002's "A Walk To Remember" ...where a bad boy (Shane West) falls in love with a shy girl (Mandy Moore)...who warns him not to fall in love with her, we find out later that she has a terminal condition but he can't let go, strangely my Star said the same thing to me early on, but I couldn't let go either....I can so identify with this movie because this is what happened with me & Star, although not as overly dramatic as the film, the premise is the same, me & Star was planning a life together & although we never got as far as Shane & Mandy's characters, we came close......all & all these are the best romance films out there, they are so realistic in nature.....it was Rock & Bittersweet that helped hook me & Star up & for that I will always be grateful.

I was just thinking about Star this morning too! I was playing my words game app "Wordscapes" earlier, it is a game where they give you a word and you have to guess and make as many other words as you can make out of that word, and the word that made me think of Star was "Bandit". Because that was the name of her latest cat that she owned. She loved that cat. I hope that little Bandit is being taken very well care of by Star's sister or someone else in the family.
Happy Birthday, Star, wherever you are!

I don't know if you have read the first story I wrote involving Max & Jennifer, Rock, I am assuming you haven't because you have not mentioned it, I had to make a revision to it, I forgot to include the chase scene....ooops......speaking of chase scenes, I just watched 1971's "Vanishing Point", how I missed this one I will never know, it is the same age as me, I thought I had seen all the car chase movies of the 70's growing up....not this one, that is one cool Dodge Challenger I must say , the new ones today are somewhat a throwback to the one in the film.....I wouldn't mind having one myself, but I am not going in debt for it, no sir.....1974's Dirty Mary Crazy Larry" I have seen many times, now I know where they got the ending from......that Dodge Charger is much cooler than the "Dukes of Hazzard" Charger.

Yeah, I read it... I didn't comment on it? Hmmm... Could've swore that I did? Oh well, I enjoyed it. I saw both "Vanishing Point" and "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry" at the Drive-In when I was a kid. My mom used to take us to go see all of the cool movies back then. Another fun car-chase flick that you might like if you haven't seen it yet is 1976's "Eat My Dust!" starring Ron Howard of "Happy Days" fame. Now that was a sweet car! An orange 68 Camaro. Howard's character wore a confederate hate in the movie too, complete with stars and bars on it! Hmmm, this may just have been the single main movie that helped inspire the creators of "The Dukes of Hazzard" TV show? Eat My Dust!

Never saw “Eat my dust”....but yeah it likely influenced the guys behind “Dukes of Hazzard”......here is a fun fact.....”Dukes of Hazzard” was meant to be a temporary show....the head of CBS hated it but was on vacation when it first aired.....he wanted it cancelled before he returned & was pissed when it became a ratings success so much that every advertising company wanted to buy airtime on it.....he had no choice but to keep it on....however the show really became parody of itself.....the first two episodes were the best.....the second season “Carnival of Thrills“ was good too....but most episodes are pretty lame now.....the kind of show where when it was good it was good & when it was bad just plain bad.
