Recently, I have seen several articles online and youtube videos about how Ramen soups are the "New currency" in prison replacing tobacco.
Thats Horse SHIT.
Its Prison, a barter economy. Everything is currency. More common items like Ramen soup have fluctuating value depending on your willingness to trade them and who that you are trading with.
Stamps generally are face value when trading, 49 cents each.
Stamps are easy to carry and conceal. You are permitted to have 60 of them.
I had many, many sources where I could buy stamps in groups of ten for 3 dollars in commissary.
They cost 4.90 for ten from commissary.
I cold still normally trade these stamps for face value.49. cents in trade.
Stamps are more currency than anything.
Want a good haircut from the barber, a stamp.
Want extra food on your tray at meal time, a stamp.
Want someone to wash your whites, clothes and sheets, a stamp.
It is a barter economy, everything is currency.
Ramen soups are not the "New currency" nor even desired by many. You cannot trade Ramen soups with someone who doesn't want nor desire them. Ramen generally has a less than commissary value in trade. They are extremely common and I doubt many ever get fair value for trade using Ramen. Most do, many do not.
Contraband pictures, drugs and tobacco have high value, or stolen materials needed for tattooing.
most commonly trade item. "Kill shots" odd name, suggestive pictures of scantily clad females. Highly flexible and flippable item. Buy for 25-50 cents sell for even upwards of 3 dollars for a rare, in demand one. Like trading cards really.
A contraband nude photo, or hardcore pornography picture usually asking price starts at 5 dollars.
A tiny amount of K2 synthetic marijuana goes for 25$. Makes about 12 very smalll pinner joints "sticks".
I have never in my life smoked K2.
I have trafficked in average sized bundles 25-35$ while incarcerated.
I didn't like transporting them. If caught in possesion you possibly could get 10 years added to your sentence.
When I found out about possibility of extra time I stopped selling them.
A lot of contraband comes in through guards.
Its mildly amusing that often, frequently the guard who brings in a lot of contraband is also the gurad who interrogates the informant inmate who is revealing who is selling. The convict informs the gurad who is the actual source for the drug. The entire prison knows very, very fast who informed. The convict is quickly moved into segregation protective custody isolation if they are "lucky".
