Night of the Demons Okay, let’s get things started here with a good scary movie to review. And remember, you’re all welcome to join in and add a review of one of your favorite Halloween-time flicks, or spooky music video, or top ten list or what-have-you? Go for it!
Tonight’s feature is a classic from 1988, Night of the Demons, and the best way that I can describe it is... think 'The Exorcist' on steroids. It is from the madcap Eighties after all, where everything goes, and boy did it ever. Night of the Demons, not to be confused with Night of the Demon, this one is plural, DEMONS. Anyway, it is the story of a group of high schoolers who on Halloween night decide to throw themselves a little party at an old abandoned mortuary named Hull House which is located out in the middle of nowhere on the outskirts of town. Hull House has a very tragic past history of death and misery that goes back for many years, long before the mortuary was ever even built. The last family who lived and worked there were all slain in a brutal mass murder that has never fully been explained, and ever since then it has been left abandoned.
While watching this movie one of the first truly eerie things that you will notice about it is the mortuary itself. Hull House actually has a very creepy atmospheric vibe to it which sets up the mood perfectly for the shocks and thrills that are to follow. The place just looks real and very scary.
So, anyway, as the teens start to get into the party spirit by drinking beer, listening to cheesy Eighties music and dancing together in the dark and dusty old house, they suddenly hear an eerie noise which causes them all to quiet down. After checking around to see what could have possibly caused the noise and finding nothing they all settle down to a good old-fashioned séance led by the gothic witch of the group, Angela. While this is all going on, downstairs in the deep dark basement is an old crematorium that contains evil spirits who suddenly break out and make their way towards the unsuspecting teens and soon things start to really get weird as Angela and some of the others quickly become possessed and start to attack the rest of the group who try to flee but find themselves trapped by the otherworldy forces from beyond.
Yes, you've seen this kind of story told a dozen times before, but not like this. NOTD has a great cast of actors, including famous scream queen Linnea Quigley who has starred in many schlocky and well-known horror movies back in the day, including one of my favorites, The Return of the Living Dead (if you haven't seen that one yet, well, what are you waiting for? Go rent it out today.). The make-up and special effects are pretty well executed for the time. And the story, while not the most original idea ever, was still adequate for setting up the scares and thrills. But as I mentioned earlier, it is Hull House itself that really sets the mood for this movie. Just the thought of being in this place late at night in the dark is scary enough let alone what follows.
So if you are looking for a really good, creepy and fun Halloween horror movie to watch one of these upcoming weekends, give Night of the Demons a try. Currently the DVD is out of print and prices are steep for available copies. You may be able to obtain a copy for rent from Netflix, but if not, you can currently catch it on You Tube.

The Raven - Edgar Allen Poe The Raven: Read by Christopher Walken Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore, While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. `'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door - Only this, and nothing more.'
Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December, And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor. Eagerly I wished the morrow; - vainly I had sought to borrow From my books surcease of sorrow - sorrow for the lost Lenore - For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore - Nameless here for evermore.
And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain Thrilled me - filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before; So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating `'Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door - Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door; - This it is, and nothing more,'
Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer, `Sir,' said I, `or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore; But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping, And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door, That I scarce was sure I heard you' - here I opened wide the door; - Darkness there, and nothing more.
Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing, Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before; But the silence was unbroken, and the darkness gave no token, And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, `Lenore!' This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, `Lenore!' Merely this and nothing more.
Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning, Soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before. `Surely,' said I, `surely that is something at my window lattice; Let me see then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore - Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore; - 'Tis the wind and nothing more!'
Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter, In there stepped a stately raven of the saintly days of yore. Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he; But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door - Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door - Perched, and sat, and nothing more.
Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling, By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore, `Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou,' I said, `art sure no craven. Ghastly grim and ancient raven wandering from the nightly shore - Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night's Plutonian shore!' Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'
Much I marvelled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly, Though its answer little meaning - little relevancy bore; For we cannot help agreeing that no living human being Ever yet was blessed with seeing bird above his chamber door - Bird or beast above the sculptured bust above his chamber door, With such name as `Nevermore.'
But the raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only, That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour. Nothing further then he uttered - not a feather then he fluttered - Till I scarcely more than muttered `Other friends have flown before - On the morrow he will leave me, as my hopes have flown before.' Then the bird said, `Nevermore.'
Startled at the stillness broken by reply so aptly spoken, `Doubtless,' said I, `what it utters is its only stock and store, Caught from some unhappy master whom unmerciful disaster Followed fast and followed faster till his songs one burden bore - Till the dirges of his hope that melancholy burden bore Of "Never-nevermore."'
But the raven still beguiling all my sad soul into smiling, Straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird and bust and door; Then, upon the velvet sinking, I betook myself to linking Fancy unto fancy, thinking what this ominous bird of yore - What this grim, ungainly, ghastly, gaunt, and ominous bird of yore Meant in croaking `Nevermore.'
This I sat engaged in guessing, but no syllable expressing To the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom's core; This and more I sat divining, with my head at ease reclining On the cushion's velvet lining that the lamp-light gloated o'er, But whose velvet violet lining with the lamp-light gloating o'er, She shall press, ah, nevermore!
Then, methought, the air grew denser, perfumed from an unseen censer Swung by Seraphim whose foot-falls tinkled on the tufted floor. `Wretch,' I cried, `thy God hath lent thee - by these angels he has sent thee Respite - respite and nepenthe from thy memories of Lenore! Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe, and forget this lost Lenore!' Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'
`Prophet!' said I, `thing of evil! - prophet still, if bird or devil! - Whether tempter sent, or whether tempest tossed thee here ashore, Desolate yet all undaunted, on this desert land enchanted - On this home by horror haunted - tell me truly, I implore - Is there - is there balm in Gilead? - tell me - tell me, I implore!' Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'
`Prophet!' said I, `thing of evil! - prophet still, if bird or devil! By that Heaven that bends above us - by that God we both adore - Tell this soul with sorrow laden if, within the distant Aidenn, It shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels name Lenore - Clasp a rare and radiant maiden, whom the angels name Lenore?' Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'
`Be that word our sign of parting, bird or fiend!' I shrieked upstarting - `Get thee back into the tempest and the Night's Plutonian shore! Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken! Leave my loneliness unbroken! - quit the bust above my door! Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!' Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'
And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door; And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming, And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor; And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor Shall be lifted - nevermore!

There's Something in the Mist! I recently watched for the very first time the 2007 movie, "The Mist", based on an old Stephen King story. Okay, what is it about this guy Stephen King anyway? It seems that both he and Halloween just seem to go together hand-in-hand like peanut butter and jelly. The guy has a million scary ideas and never seems to run out of them, does he? Well, Halloween just wouldn't be complete without a Stephen King movie, that's for sure.
Anyway, this is a really good movie directed by Frank Darabont. It is the simple story about an ominous mist that overtakes a small town after a violent storm one night. The next morning a bunch of shoppers are in the store gathering essential needs when this mysterious eerie mist suddenly engulfs the entire store and when anyone tries to exit it, well, let's just say that good things definitely do not happen to them.
There is something in the Mist, something very hideous and terrifying. Whatever could it be and where did it come from, you might ask? Well, you will just have to watch the movie to find out.
If you are looking for a really good and creepy creature feature to watch during this Halloween season then give The Mist a try.

They really had a video game based on this movie? What was it like, Robotron 2084, only your character is inside a cloudy mist and can't see a damn thing and you have to shoot wildly all around and hope you get lucky and hit something? I sure hope that the game has unlimited firepower at least? Heh.

Brainscan Edward Furlong plays a young videogame/computer nerd named Michael Brower who discovers a new intense interactive video game called "Brainscan" that is advertised in an issue of Fangoria magazine. He soon receives the first disk of the game in the mail and puts it into his advanced home computer system and immediately gets hypnotically sucked into the first chapter which involves the first-person perspective scenario task of murdering a person while they are in their bed asleep. After completing this brutal and gruesome lifelike challenge in the allotted time, Michael snaps out of his dreamlike state in a sweat-drenched rush. Later on while watching the news on TV he discovers that a local man has just been murdered while in his sleep, and the crime scene footage is exactly the same as it was in the interactive game that Michael just played. Soon, a mysterious entity known only as The Trickster suddenly appears in Michael's bedroom challenging him to complete the next level of the game. What happens next? Well, you will just have to watch this really good movie in order to find out. BRAINSCAN ( FULL MOVIE 1994)
